Falling Waters Battlefield Association Meetings

Don Silvius to speak on “And Then What?  (After the Battle)”

Find the meeting here!

Please note that the meeting will be on the THIRD Thursday in September.  This is a one-time change of the meeting day.  Meetings will return to the second Thursday of the month in November.

At the September meeting of the Falling Waters Battlefield Association there will be a presentation by local historian Don Silvius titled "And Then What? (After the Battle)”.  Don will focus on what happened in Berkeley County after the Battle of Falling Waters (July 2, 1861) and how the result had its repercussions nineteen days later at the Battle of First Manassas (July 21, 1861).  He will answer the question: Was someone really scared to death by Union soldiers in Martinsburg?  Don will also address the impact of Northern troops moving into Berkeley County, driving out the Confederates, and how that affected the local “Home Front”.  This period between Falling Waters and Manassas receives little attention, but what happened here actually impacted the rest of the Civil War.

To illustrate the war’s effect on Berkeley County, Don will discuss and name the local casualties at First Manassas.  Those were the first soldiers from Berkeley County to die in the Civil War.  Note that none of the casualties at the Battle of Falling Waters were from Berkeley County.

Don Silvius is knowledgeable in all aspects of Berkeley County history and much of the Northern Shenandoah Valley as well.  He was born in Martinsburg and has lived in Berkeley County virtually all of his life.  Don has served on the Board of Directors of the Berkeley County Historical Society for twenty years.  During that time, he served as both President and Vice President.  Don has helped to prepare and edit many of the societies’ publications.  He has created a growing on-line presence for the Historical Society including a website and social media.  Don has also recently been appointed to the new Berkeley County Museum Commission.  Don and his wife live near Inwood.
